Our farm connects to families and individuals through our
Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares. However, as
the CSA movement has grown, there is no single definition of
feel strongly characterize how our particular CSA operates.
Our CSA and our members are the focus of work and the core
of our farming operation. In 2012, members will provide 86%
of our planned annual budget and will receive at least 86% or
more of the farm's harvest. We do not take advantage of
additional markets for short-term financial gain if it would
impact the fair share of our member's harvest. We have a
deep appreciation for the health, relationships and support of
our CSA members. Our CSA is much more than a marketing
tool.
Our farm produce is handled with care. It is cleaned and
stored in prime condition. Although there is great value in
local foods from social, environmental, spiritual and economic
points of view, we feel it should also be of better quality and
flavor than conventional alternatives.
Our CSA and farm truly embrace a sustainable and
environmentally enhancing approach to farming. Although we
do not have all the answers, we do spend considerable time
and resources to maintain and improve soil and water quality
and use ecological services in our farming system. We are
certified organic. To some this is a difficult and time
consuming process, but we feel it is important to our members
and our own values. We think the independent third-party
certification process and the added scrutiny and
record-keeping makes us a better managed farm. In addition,
we have created both beneficial insect and pollinator habitat
on the farm, taken steps to improve organic matter and
severely reduce erosion through extensive cover cropping,
reconstructed prairie, and improved tree and shrub habitat for
insects and animals.
NATURALLY GROWN.
LOCALLY PRODUCED.
CERTIFIED ORGANIC.
Our farm is organized to benefit the households of our members and so we ask new members to consider carefully be
the final word. We have little interest in expanding or creating more than a reasonable income. We have a fairly stable
community of CSA members. However, there are always some new openings each year and if you think you would
benefit greatly by being a member of our farm, we will work to make that happen.
Becoming a part of Small Potatoes Farm through a CSA share is an excellent way to invest in the health of your family
and your community. Besides taking home a box of fresh vegetables each week, you also get an opportunity to effect
change in our food and agriculture system.
